
The images below show the custom LED light for macro photography of buttons made from a battery operated camping light. The 24 LED light was modified so that the hole in the plastic light case would slip over the barrel of the Canon camera. Enlarging the center hole of the light removed the bayonet closure for the case so two sheet metal screws were added to the outside diameter of the plastic case to secure the two halves together. The fixture for holding the buttons for imaging is a simple "helping hands" device from Harbor Freight. The need to color correct for the blue tint of the LED lights is demonstrated in the lower pictures. The light has the beneficial effect of lighting the subject from 360 degrees thus reducing shadows. It is problematic for highly reflective surfaces as can be seen in the bottom photo. A simple filter screen over the LEDs might correct this issue.
